My brother recently posted an article describing a conversation we had over breakfast. I feel as if my position was not explained entirely, so here’s my two cents on the topic. I would choose the Volkswagen Phaeton over a Jaguar E-Type only in the circumstance of a first/only car. Of course, if I owned a car already and did not need to worry about the practicality of the E-Type, then it’s an easy decision.

Frequently, a first car will need to carry its driver, along with his/her friends, luggage, various beverages, etc. on potentially long voyages. An E-Type cannot accomplish these tasks day-in and day-out reliably. Where the Phaeton is undeniably beat is in terms of “specialness” (for lack of a better term). My brother and I discussed that although the Phaeton was constructed with massively powerful engine choices, driving it would not evoke the same feeling that one gets in an E-Type.

A first car –for me at least- should not be one that I am concerned about breaking every time I drive it. This is certainly the case with the German-engineered VW. Not only does that apply to the mechanics of it, but I would also not be worried about the inevitable weathering that would occur to the exterior of the car, because as my brother said, “it looks like a bigger version of a Passat.”

With all of this on the table, I still experience hesitation when answering the question at hand. What’s the explanation?
